Hey, it's Hunk! I can't come to the phone right now, probably because my hands are super gross. Leave a message!

Character
Name: Hunk
Series: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Timeline: End of season 7
Canon Resource Links: 1 | 2

Personality: In the first episode Allura mentions that the defining traits of the yellow lion are kindness and a big heart, and Hunk has both in spades. He's the one that convinces the team to go back and save the Balmera for no other reason than because saving people is the right thing to do. One of his key roles throughout the series is trying to make his teammates get along; part of his canon description on the Voltron website mentions that he hates it when there's a negative dynamic in his team and does what he can to smooth that over.

Season two may have been thin on Hunk development, but it's thick with Hunk's heart. We see more of Hunk's nurturing nature certainly as he accidentally bakes glass cookies for the team. They're later found useful for reflecting light that allows them to escape from the Galra, and Hunk's response is to smile and say he's just glad people are enjoying his cookies.

We also see a bit of his commanding nature. When he takes over Vrepit Sal's in Space Mall he doesn't hesitate, instantly wrenching control of the place from the mean-spirited owner. He's confident and knows what he's doing; once he's in his element there's no shaking him. Whether it's engineering or food related, Hunk has a center that grounds him and makes him unshakeable.

And that same nature makes him an amazing friend and teammate. There's nothing he wouldn't do for the sake of his friends, and his good heart gives him a sense of genuineness that makes him instantly likeable. He's big on asking questions, speaking his mind in a way that many can't get away with. He jokes with Keith about being Galra at a time when everyone else is walking around on egg shells about it, both because he likes Keith and is genuinely curious. He has no problem accepting Keith's Galra nature.

As the seasons develop, and especially into season seven, we see more of the core of who Hunk is. He's afraid, constantly afraid, but as Keith points out it's actually his fear that makes him strong. Despite being afraid he doesn't hesitate to leap into danger, or to take the heavy hits for his team. He accepts his fear and turns it into determination to keep the people he cares about safe. When the paladins return to earth and he discovers that his family was the only one that wasn't saved -- that his parents are in a work camp -- he puts himself at risk to get out to the work camp where they are. He isn't able to save them, but seeing them there gives him the determination he needs to put his all into the fight to rid the planet Earth of the Galra empire.

He's smarter than most people give him credit for, canonly on par with Allura and Shiro, and while he uses his intelligence in his engineering work and it certainly funnels into his adaptive abilities, he uses it more often with people. He can read them pretty easily and is good at fitting in with most groups because of this skill. He's not manipulative; he uses his ability with people to put them at ease. Ultimately, he just likes people. He wants to use his ability to make people, especially those close to him, happy.

Victory Road Sample:
Hunk had a lot of reservations about this place. If Shiro hadn't been there to pick up him when he arrived, apparently he would've had to actually walk across basically the entire country to get here. Walk! He did not grow up fixing cars with his dad to have to walk everywhere the rest of his life, thank you very much.

And then there was the fighting. So much fighting! These adorable little creatures deserved a better life than having to fight each other for no good reason. He scritched his Togedemaru under the chin, grinning as she closed her eyes and leaned into his hand. A few of the Pokemon in their house helped him out in the kitchen now, or in the garage, or with any of his building experiments and he loved it. He just wished he could show his mom and dad.

That was the third thing. After fighting so hard to get his family back, here he was. He was glad he knew they were back at home, safe and sound from the Galra, but... he missed them. His niece and nephew had grown up so much in the time they'd been gone.

But at least this place was really pretty. Sometime Hunk might even hit the road and explore the area. Not to battle for Pokemon, but just to see the sights. Visit new parts of this weird world.

Just, you know. Not on foot. And with plenty of supplies. On a safe route. With readily available bathrooms. Seriously, where did people pee when they were flying on Pokemon for hours at a time?

And he had his team. They were all here together, surviving, just like they always have. Hunk was scared, but he knew if he stuck with his team they'd all be fine. They'd gotten out of worse scrapes before, right? Hey, at least nothing here was trying to kill them. What could happen?

IN CHARACTER
Name: Hunk
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defenders
Canon Point: End of season two.
Age: Not confirmed by canon, but I'd put him at 18 when the series began, 19 now.

History: Extremely little is known about Hunk's life before he joined the Garrison. From an interview with Hunk's voice actor on February 5th, we know a few things. He's Samoan; his parents were Samoan immigrants and likely raised Hunk in Hawaii. He also enjoys a close relationship with his mother, and his mother is the one who gave him his love and technical knowledge when it comes to cooking and food. The actor also speculated that Hunk isn't likely to have known any of the Voltron members prior to joining the Garrison.

So the Garrison is where he met the two people who would ultimately become his closest friends at the Garrison, Lance and Pidge. The trio managed to drag themselves through scrape after scrape, with Hunk typically the voice of reason suggesting that they skip out on getting into trouble in exchange for hanging out at the dorm with some movies and some snacks.

And that's exactly how he got roped into this whole mess to begin with. After he and Lance, a friend of his from the Garrison, catch their teammate Pidge sneaking out to use technical equipment to track an alien signal, they inadvertently witness an alien ship crash land that happens to have an old missing Garrison member, Shiro, on board. After hearing him say something about Voltron an old drop out classmate of theirs, Keith, makes a distraction to zoom in and rescue Shiro. Lance, Hunk and Pidge rush in and end up caught up in said rescue and escape.

It turns out Keith stumbled across an area that housed what they would later learn is one of the Voltron lions, the blue lion. Hunk, as it turns out, had already mathed the line of data Pidge had recorded and used it to create a kind of Geiger counter to track the lion's energy signal. It ends up bonding with Lance and catapulting deep into space. They're brought to a castle that seems to be asleep -- when it wakes up Princess Allura tells them about how the five lions are defenders of the universe. She discovers that she along with her friend Corran have been asleep for 10,000 years and that their people had been killed by the Galra. Shiro then remembers that it's these very people who had kidnapped and tortured him, and together they learn that their leader Zarkon is hunting for Voltron.

Shiro, Pidge, Hunk and Keith all head out on missions to retrieve their lions, with Hunk accompanying Lance and surviving a gun fight to break his out. Once everyone has their Voltrons it takes them a bit to figure out how to combine them on a regular basis, but once they have their team is formed and ready to defend the universe.

Throughout their adventures Hunk shows engineering skill and heart. When he visits the Balmera he instantly bonds with the alien people there, who are incredibly strong and have a direct connection with the living creature that makes up their planet. He specifically forms a close relationship with Shay, who unlike her brother Rex seems willing to extend some kind of trust. Hunk swears to come back and help free her people, a promise he makes good on. While his entire team is willing to abandon the Balmera, not convinced that the risk is worth it, Hunk puts his heavy foot down as the voice of morality for the team. He determines that the reason they're here in the first place is to help people, and he finally manages to convince his team to do just that.

At the end of the season Allura has been captured and the five paladins launch a mission to save her. They fight Zarkon and fail. All the paladins are zapped through an unstable wormhole, shipped off to differing parts unknown.

In season two we learn that Hunk has been sent to a water planet with Lance. It turns out it's inhabited by mermaids that offer to feed and care for the paladins while attempting to contact Allura's castle for them. Unfortunately the mermaid population is being controlled by an outside source, later learned to be a kind of sentient coral reef. Lance and Hunk are drugged but ultimately escape mind control by way of a head-hugging antidote provided by mermaid rebels. Together they save the local population from the creature's control and are found by Pidge who brings them back to the castle.

The season is a little thin on Hunk development, but we do learn a few things. His love for cooking is expanded on in Space Mall when he eats samples only to find out that they are not, in fact, food samples. Forced to work off his payment by way of working in the kitchen of Vrepit Sal's, he's the head chef before the episode ends, lording over it in a Gordon Ramsay-esque manner while a crowd of eager customers is overjoyed with the food related results.

The Belly of the Weblum is the next strong Hunk episode, featuring him and a Keith who's recently discovered his Galra blood heading out to gather crystals to repair the castle with. He manages to make Keith feel less awkward about his recent discovery, getting so friendly with him that Keith actually feels comfortable making a joke with him. The two of them work their way through the Weblum and Hunk discovers that he needs to exit the Weblum to attack it from the outside, making it angry enough to form the internal crystals they need to gather. Keith stays inside with a silent Galra that they rescued earlier on and together they complete the mission successfully.

At the end of the season the five paladins launch their elaborate plan to defeat Zarkon and ultimately succeed. When they return to the castle they discover that despite recently recovering his bayard and unlocking his lion's wings, Shiro had vanished from inside his lion.

Personality: In the first episode Allura mentions that the defining traits of the yellow lion are kindness and a big heart, and Hunk has both in spades. He's the one that convinces the team to go back and save the Balmera for no other reason than because saving people is the right thing to do. Setting: Hunk would first and foremost be interested in local flora and fauna, specifically in regards to whether or not it's edible and can be added to their daily food rations. He does this canonically in the series. He'll fit in easily in a community environment like this, as proven by the Space Mall episode, he easily falls into roles that suit him and makes them his own. So long as he can utilize his engineering and cooking skills he's likely to be pretty happy. Well, so long as he isn't forced to sit and watch people suffer.

Abilities/Skills: Hunk is incredibly strong. He is in fact state as having raw physical strength that is greater than that of Shiro's mechanical arm. He's also an incredibly gifted engineer and more intelligent than people give him credit for. On the official Voltron page his intelligence is ranked second, tied with Shiro and Allura and ranked only below Pidge. He's also a skilled chef and loves making food that people enjoy.

Strengths/Weaknesses: His strengths are dealing with people, cooking, physical strength, compassion and patience. His weaknesses involve having a very weak stomach, getting scared pretty easily (especially when left alone) and that same compassion. He can get pretty emotional and cries easily. Oh, and he snores. That probably counts as a weakness.

Items: His Voltron armor, his bayard, his typical outfit (shirt, pants, gloves, two hip pouches, boots and a vest).

Oh. Oh no.

Okay, I'll be right back, I'm just gonna--

Best bro. Absolute tech genius, tester of all of his food experiments, tiny enough to carry very easily. Can hack trees. Kind of a badass. Tolerates his vomit.
